Latina Identity
The radio segment I chose for this blog was “From Locatora Radio: Faketinas” from the Latino USA site. This program aired on October 12,2021 and I listened to it on October 24,2021.This was one of the first featured podcasts from independent latino and latina creators on Latino USA this year.Locatora Radio is an independent podcast based out of Los Angeles that has a big latin audience. In the episode “Faketinas” of Locatora radio the hosts were Mala Munoz and Diosa FM and the main idea of it was fake Latinas in the modern day.The hosts go over various cases in which a person without latin roots lies and claims to be Latino or Latina in order to obtain better opportunities in life like in the workforce, school, business opportunities, and titles. One case that I really liked was of a woman by name of Hilaria Baldwin. Hilaria was a scam artist for some time before she was exposed,She identified as a Spanish woman when in reality she was a pure white woman from Massachusetts. Hilaria would use a fake Spanish accent and her real name is actually Hilary(Locatora 15:16 - 16:00).She used a fake persona in order to obtain more publicity and get more Latino supporters. One thing I learned from the podcast was that it has become a trend to catfish ethnicities now.The thing that surprised me the most was how far some people are willing to while maintaining an unethical act.Overall the episode “Faketinas” was very enjoyable to listen to since the hosts were very entertaining and Informal at the same time.
This image is a meme that was made of Hilary Baldwin after her act was exposed.

The JSTOR article that I picked is about Latina Identity. The article’s name was “Latina Identity:Reconciling Ritual,Culture, and Belonging” by the author Stacy E.Schultz.In this article the author goes over a few artists that specializes in bringing attention to Latina Identity through their art. This is why I chose the article since It goes over Latinas just like the podcast. The work of the seminal figure Ana Mendieta is especially significant in this regard. In searching for a sense of place in her own work within a specifically latin American context while highlighting the female body, she paved the way for an ongoing investigation of the intersections of Latin American culture and feminine identity(Schultz 13).She and other latina/latino artists share stories of latin culture, rituales, and belonging through their unique art because they actually embraced their roots unlike the faketinas talked about in the podcast.
In conclusion both my sources the podcast episode and the article were about Latina identity. An interesting thing about the two is that they can both relate to my theme. My theme of “To what extent are humans responsible for the environment” was shown a few times throughout them. For example in the podcast episode “Faketinas” the hosts brought up the issue of how some fake latinas were responsible of taking opportunities from real latinas by claiming to something they weren’t(32:40 - 33:45).In the article the artists try to educate people with their paintings so the two sources talk about people who have had an impact on the environment(Schultz 19)”Establishing a history was especially important for Fusco and Gomez-pena,because this practice of display dates back to the spanish conquest.”In this assignment I really enjoyed both sources and the topics that were gone over.
