OAXACALIFORNIA: WHEREVER YOU MAY GO
After going through the Museum of Latin American Art online and seeing lots of different paintings and art forms on the site one mural in particular caught my attention. The mural was Wherever you may go from the Tlacolulokos collection by the artists Dario Canul and Cosijoesa Cemas. The image was made in 2017 with acrylic on canvas. Both of the artists are from Tlacolula,Oaxaca,Mexico a Zapotec community that is found in the central valley region of the state. The community has strong ties with southern California since the early 1940s due to a huge amount of agricultural workers migrating there for work.Currently the state of Oaxaca is one of the regions in Mexico with the highest migration rate to the United States. The mural has the writing Oaxacalifornia at the top to show how strong the connection is between the Oaxacan people and the state of California.

Tlacolulokos Duo style
The duo's work is a combination of different styles from street art, to murals and screen printing. They usually do their art work within traditional arts spaces and the streets. The duo of Dario and Cosijoesa Cernas have managed to illustrate on the local reality and problems along with the challenges the people from Oaxaca face regularly.Basically they take inspiration from what they have experienced or seen growing up in their place of origin. For example in the art mural above the artists offer a critical look at the ideas of the preservation of tradition at all costs and cultural purity.

The JSTOR article I chose for this blog was Poetry as Wonder, Desire, Rage, and Memory: A Conversation with Natalie Diaz by David Shook and Natalie Diaz.I chose this article specifically because the Tlacolulokos were mentioned in the mix.The duo was praise throughout the article due to their wonderful work they have created over the years. The theme I chose for this semester "To what extent are humans responsible for the environment" is shown in the article and the art work of the duo.The duo have taken inspiration from their environment and have inspired others around them to embrace their surroundings and create new things.A good example would be how they were talked about by the two people in the Jstor article.Although I am not a big fan of art I really like what this duo of artists is doing since they are unique. In conclusion the article and art museum helped me learn a lot about my semester theme.
